06/09/2000 My big project goes live, and it is good. Today was a great 'frog' day. Regular frog days appear regularly. Any 'Friday the 9th' is a frog day. A 6-9 frog day is just a stellar event.

The big news today was that code that I have been working on for the past six weeks went into (active!) production. My code, and that of a lot of other people, was moved into production late in the day.

(This puts me in mind of what a friend of mine wrote, I believe in jest, about my writing of a trip that we took together)

I went to JournalsOnline and looked at "Monday." Boy, you really know how to make me look like a REAL CHUMP, don't you! I didn't say those things you said I said! I didn't do those things you said I did! You distorted EVERYTHING to make me look like the EVIL OGRE, didn't you! Every scene has me as the GOOD-FOR-NOTHING, and Rich as the BIG FUCKING HERO who SAVES THE DAY, doesn't it! Way to GO!!!
After the launch we sat and watched a 'tail -f' of a log file. We were watching the activity of the site, and of my code, in real time. We had no way of knowing _who_ was using the site (nor do we want to know that!), but we do know that it is being used. And used. And used.

It was strangely exciting, and compelling, to watch this evidence of my 'power of creation' scroll past the screen.

Thursday afternoon a Chinese menu was circulated, and we all got to order our favorites. I went with the spring rolls and 'beef, Hunan style.' The biggest lesson that I can offer about working on a project is that when the talk turns to ordering in dinner, you can kiss goodbye to any plans that you had for the evening!

Fortunately I had no great plans, and so staying until 11:00pm was no big deal. When I left I told my colleague that he should leave as well, but he still has the memory of Grad school all nighters, so he and another fellow stayed until three AM. They were back Friday morning at 8:00 AM.

Shortly (like, minutes) before going live we called together to consider a rather major enhancement. Having new ideas thrust forward at the last minute is a bit frustrating, but it was also exciting to (as was pointed out by another person) to be involved in a project that, while important, is small enough so that five people can make big decisions at the very last minute.

I'm having fun.
